FROM THE ARTIST:
My recent work seeks transformation through process to create objects that recall memories of transient narratives and regional landscapes.
Digital transfer of altered personal photographs, graphic images, and embossed textures that impress repeat patterns onto the responsive surface of the clay allow me to create objects of permanent remembrance. Precious windows into an intimately observed place or time.
Physical reminders of everyday objects displaced from common usage. Repetition of dreamlike images, forms, and luxurious materiality triggering possessive desire.
Beauty in the glimpsed moment. Events captured. Myths made.
The creative process takes place over successive application of surface decoration during multiple stages of object making. The wet clay is thrown on a wheel and altered, or hand built from textured slabs. The resulting ceramic object is used as a layered pictorial surface. A wash of iron and copper oxide is applied to accentuate textural elements. Wax resist may be applied to protect graphic areas. Liquid glaze is painted onto the raw ceramic surface and a second high temperature firing fully vitrifies the clay and glaze. Photographic reproductions, printed as a Red Iron Oxide decal transfer, are applied to the glazed surface and a third, lower temperature firing fuses the image permanently into the slightly melted glaze. Multiple firings, with overlapping and layered imagery and applied details of 24k gold lustre, allow a story to unfold like a dimly recalled memory or fleeting dream.
