NOW OPEN!Between 1860 and 1915, the glassmaking industry on the Venetian island of Murano experienced intense growth. From the Venetian Glass Revival to a surge in Venice’s popularity as a destination for American tourism, Italian glass heavily influenced American art, literature, design theory, and period ideologies of gender, labor, and class relations. Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano presents exquisite examples of Venetian glass and brings to life the artistic experimentation the city evoked in works by artists such as William Merritt Chase, Frank Duveneck, James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and many others. |
