Fortuny: Friends and Followers
THROUGH JUNE 2, 2019
Mariano Fortuny y Marsal’s (1838–1874)
painterly, proto-Impressionist style dazzled critics, spawned imitators,
and enamored collectors. This exhibition showcases his far-reaching
influence among artists such as William Merritt Chase (1849–1916),
Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815–1891),
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), James Tissot (1836–1902), and many
more.
This exhibition has been organized by the Meadows Museum and funded by a generous gift from The Meadows Foundation.
Goya’s Visions in Ink: The Centerpiece of the Meadows Drawings Collection
THROUGH NOVEMBER 3, 2019
This exhibition highlights the Meadows’s recent acquisition of Francisco de Goya’s exceptional ink drawing Visions (c.
1819–23) from his “Witches and Old Women” album. This important
acquisition is the first drawing by Goya to enter the museum’s
collection, which already includes key paintings and prints by the
Spanish master: The Meadows Museum now joins only a handful of
institutions worldwide that can boast such significant holdings of the
artist’s work across media.
This exhibition has been organized by the Meadows Museum and funded by a generous gift from The Meadows Foundation.
Thursday, May 2, 6:00 p.m.Stephanie Stepanek, curator emerita of prints and drawings, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
This lecture will consider
the Meadows’ new Goya drawing from multiple points of view: its
placement within an extended sequence devoted to the perception of the
surreal and the real; its connection to other works of social satire in
Goya’s oeuvre; and as an example of the artist’s superb command of the brush.
