The Self Publication in the Athello Beck Gallery — reception on Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at South Dallas Cultural Center, 3400 S Fitzhugh Ave, Dallas, TX 75210-2572. The exhibition will run from Nov. 9, 2019 until Jan. 4, 2020.
Summary:
The Self Publication is a collection of photography and personal essays designed to uplift and combat the harsh stereotypes associated with men and women in the Black Community. The project was created by photographer & designer, Nitashia Johnson.
With The Self Publication, I hope to counter negative media portrayals of people of color with “new representations of black women (and black culture in general) [through] art, design and photography.”
“I see The Self Publication as a healing mechanism,” the artist adds—one that helps participants “understand their own worth. I’ve created two publications I’m fond of and I want to share the stories.”
