Just as a painting comes to life through each brush stroke and layers of paint, “I Am Woman” has been an evolution for Missy Burton as an artist. The initial inspiration started with the single thought centered on the advancement of women and how far they have come in gaining equality through time. As she has continued to explore this concept through her viewfinder, a very different story started to emerge. As she reviewed the images, she started to feel synergies between all of my subjects regardless of their background. This energy that she felt was so beautiful she knew that this was the story she wanted to tell. As she began the curation process, she was compelled to write a piece of poetry for each image to make the stories even more compelling. “I Am Woman” explores the powerful complexity of the female essence. Who is she? She is the vessel for all humankind. She is simultaneously mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, grandmother, wife & matriarch. She is a nurturer yet she is neglected. She is fearless yet she is afraid. She is hopeful yet she is hopeless. She is empowered yet she is enslaved. She is the supreme multi-tasker and at times appears to be super human. Her essence is her super power and she is the only reason your legacy exists.
